Ways to Prevent Mould in Coastal and High Humidity Homes (Gold Coast, Tweed, Byron)

Warm temperatures and humidity make the Gold Coast, Tweed Valley and Byron Bay region a prime environment for mould growth. Mould is not just a cosmetic issue. It is usually a sign that moisture is building up somewhere in the home, often unnoticed until it becomes widespread.
The most effective mould prevention strategy is simple: reduce moisture and keep indoor humidity under control.

1) Improve ventilation where moisture is created
Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens generate moisture quickly. If that moisture cannot escape, it settles into building materials and creates the conditions mould needs.
Use exhaust fans during and after showering, cooking and laundry
Keep doors closed while running exhaust to pull moisture out efficiently
Open windows when weather permits to increase cross ventilation
2) Reduce indoor humidity
Humidity is a key driver of recurring mould, especially in bedrooms, wardrobes and closed-up living areas.
Avoid using humidifiers unless there is a clear need
Be mindful with indoor drying of clothes
Limit unflued gas heater use, as they can add moisture to indoor air
If humidity is consistently high, consider dehumidification or improved HVAC control
3) Control water leaks early
Small leaks can feed a large mould problem.
Repair roof leaks, plumbing leaks and shower recess defects early
Keep gutters and stormwater systems clear
After storms, check ceilings, skylights, window frames and external walls
4) Act fast after water ingress
Wet building materials can become mould-affected within 48 hours if they are not dried properly. If water has entered your home:
Dry carpets and materials promptly
Remove items that cannot be fully dried
Consider an inspection if you suspect water has entered wall cavities or subfloors
5) Manage rising damp and subfloor moisture
In some buildings, moisture rises through masonry or accumulates under the floor and worsens indoor dampness.
Ensure subfloor vents and weep holes are not covered
If you suspect rising or lateral damp, get building moisture mapping and advice on a long-term fix
When to book a mould inspection
If mould keeps returning, if you notice musty smells without visible mould, or if there was a leak that may have impacted hidden cavities, a professional mould inspection can identify the moisture driver and the true extent of the issue. This is often the difference between “cleaning mould” and actually solving it.
